Former Northern Ireland manager Billy Bingham has admitted he is looking forward to unearthing young Irish players for Burnley.

Bingham had been out of the game since leaving as Blackpool's director of football in the 1990s but will help the Clarets search Ireland for new players.

"I'm pleased because I was sitting on my backside doing nothing," the 76-year-old told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"I was in retirement but I think they know I am a good judge of a player."

He added: "[Burnley] hope that I could point them in the right direction of one or two players, particularly in Ireland."

Bingham, who led Northern Ireland to the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals has admitted that there are several players in his homeland capable of making the grade in England.

"I watched two or three matches in the last month and I saw four players that I would have said have a chance.

"It depends what league you are talking about. I think they could play in the Championship, and as they prosper and get better, older and wiser I think they could be good players."

Bingham's appointment to the backroom staff at Burnley comes at a time when the club already have a strong Irish contingent.

Striker Kyle Lafferty and defender Michael Duff are regulars in the Northern Ireland squad, with Alan Mahon a Republic of Ireland international, and Chris McCann capped up to under-19 level.
