Bristol Rovers have signed Doncaster and former Bristol City striker Paul Heffernan on a month-long loan deal.

The 28-year-old Irishman joined Doncaster in 2005 and scored when they beat beat Rovers in the final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy in 2007.

"With Chris Lines injured we need another goal threat and I think Paul can add to it," director of football Lennie Lawrence told BBC Radio Bristol.

"He knows his position and knows his game and we're pleased to sign him."

Lawrence continued: "We've got to bring people in that are either different or on a par with what we've got already, if not better.

"We don't normally loan unless there's a prospect of extending it to its maximum or a permanent, and in Paul's case there is a possibility of a permanent move in the summer."

Heffernan began his career with Notts County in 1999 where he made 114 appearances in all competitions, scoring 37 goals.

In 2004 he joined Bristol City spending just one season at Ashton Gate scoring five times in 27 league matches.

Heffernan moved to Doncaster in June 2005 and has bagged 53 goals, his last coming in the 4-1 home defeat by Middlesbrough two weeks ago.
