Bristol City open talks with striker Nicky Maynard
Maynard was joint top scorer in the Championship in the 2009/10 season
Bristol City have opened talks with striker Nicky Maynard over a new deal.
The 24-year-old has scored six goals in his last eight games after returning from a knee injury in early February.
Maynard has netted 38 times for the Robins since his £2.25m move from Crewe in July 2008 and has 12 months remaining on his Ashton Gate contract.
"I don't want to leave everything to the summer. We know what we want to do and that's what we're getting on with," manager Keith Millen told BBC Bristol.
"Nicky's happy to be back playing again, fit and scoring goals and we're delighted to have him. There's discussions going on, like there is with a couple of players."
One of those is 34-year-old skipper Louis Carey, who is set to return to training after being sidelined with a fractured skull since February.
Millen said: "We haven't really started negotiations but I've said to him I'd like him to stay next year and it's not one I'm offering because I've known him for a long time and he's been here 10 or 11 years. We wouldn't do that.
"I've got to be looking at him as one of the first-team squad who can give something to the team next year."
