Head injury sidelines Bristol City skipper Louis Carey

Bristol City will be without defender Louis Carey for at least six weeks after the skipper fractured his skull in the 2-0 home win against Scunthorpe.

The 34-year-old sustained the injury in a clash of heads with visiting striker Joe Garner in the first-half.

However, despite coughing up blood at half-time, Carey played through the 90 minutes before going to hospital, where he was admitted overnight.

He will see a specialist this week to determine the extent of the injury.

Carey was not perturbed at the interval as he believed the injury was linked to the recent knock he sustained at Leeds, when he was replaced after suffering cuts around the nose.

"I got through the second half and it was a bit of a strange sensation, a strange feeling. But I got through alright and it didn't affect my game really," he told the Bristol City website.

The outing was Carey's 603rd for City and he is bearing down on John Atyeo's all-time club appearance record of 645.

"I'm still determined to play again this season," he added. "Injuries happen and I just have to deal with it and take the right steps to recover.

"I know people will think my chances of getting the appearance record for the club will be affected, but that's not in my mind at all. There's plenty of time yet."
