David James earns new Bristol City contract

Bristol City goalkeeper David James has been handed a one-year contract extension by the Championship club.

The 40-year-old moved to Ashton Gate last summer after leaving Portsmouth following their relegation from the Premier League.

By playing 30 games for the Robins this season, he has triggered a renewal clause in his current deal.

"I'm happy that I've played the games to have earned another contract," James told BBC Points West.

"When I came here, there had to be incentives for me to want to carry on playing.

"Having been here for two thirds of a season and, enjoying the experience, I want to continue and improve on that."

James, who has also had spells with Liverpool, West Ham, Manchester City, Aston Villa and Watford, has won 53 caps for England.

His last appearance for the national team came in the 4-1 World Cup second round defeat by Germany in Bloemfontein, South Africa in June.

James 'loving' time at Bristol City

"I had a lot of injuries last season, most of the time I was just maintaining a physical existence with a view to playing in the World Cup finals, which I did," added James.

"I gave a season's worth of effort to get to the World Cup and after that I wasn't in the best shape. I didn't realise I was going to be so fatigued."

City, who ended a six-games winless run with last weekend's 4-0 victory at Preston, currently lie 18th in the Championship, eight points above the relegation zone.

"We're not where we would like to be, but I think that there's a lot of belief in the side," said James. "I think we're definitely moving in the right direction.

"I can look at one game and say that was good and look at another game and think that it wasn't so good.

"We've conceded too many goals and if it goes in the back of my net, somewhere along the line I've got to put my hand up for that."
