Brighton & Hove Albion's Uruguyan manager Gus Poyet has confirmed he has international ambitions.

Poyet guided the Seagulls to the League One title last year.

He told BBC Sussex: "I'd love to manage, for example, my country. But before getting there I have to manage a top-class, high-division club.

"You need to deal with stars. When you've done that, and maybe won trophies, I'll be ready to go to an international team."

He added: "I don't think you should go into a national team without being in that position.

"I need to get into the top first, to be a contender.

"I believe you need to be of the standards of Fabio Capello. He's been at some of the best teams in the world.

"I've only been at Brighton, so I've got a long way to go."

The Seagulls, who are top of the Championship after six games, travel to Leicester City on Saturday, and Poyet admitted he was an admirer of Foxes' manager Sven Goran Eriksson.

"He's been very successful," Poyet said. "I know what people think about Sven and what happened with England, but I'm totally opposite to what people think.

"He had a very good spell. People have to be realistic. It is very, very difficult to win a World Cup."
