New signing Craig Mackail-Smith was Brighton and Hove Albion's top transfer target of the summer, according to Seagulls manager Gus Poyet.

Brighton signed the 27-year-old striker from Peterborough for a club record fee believed to be around £2.5m on Monday.

Poyet told BBC Sussex: "He was the one I asked the chairman to get, we tried really, really hard to get him.

"I know what he is capable of doing - that's why he was my target. I'm a happy man."

Poyet continued: "The chairman, Tony Bloom, and John Stephenson [Head of Football Operations] have been excellent, doing what was needed to get the player."

The Uruguayan said Mackail-Smith, who scored 35 goals for Posh last season, will give his side an added dimension up front.

"Without doubt he will bring plenty of goals to the team, but also an unbelievable work rate," Poyet continued. "Opposition defenders will have to be on their toes all the time.

"He will always give you something. Even on a bad day, he doesn't stop running.

"Now we are going to be a more competitive team."

Mackail-Smith told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph it was Poyet's vision that persuaded him to choose Brighton ahead of clubs including West Ham, leicester and Queens Park Rangers.

"I was very impressed with everything Gus Poyet had to say, he sold me his vision for the club and where he wants it to go, which is very exciting," said Mackail-Smith.

"I did speak to other clubs, but this move felt right for me. The manager made me feel that he really wanted me."

The striker, who scored a total of 99 goals in 212 appearances for Posh, faces an early re-union with his former club when the clubs meet at Brighton's new Amex Community Stadium on August 27.
