Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Jamie Smith is aiming to win a regular first team place after winning praise from manager Gus Poyet.

The Uruguayan hailed the impact the 20-year-old had as a substitute in the 0-0 draw with Southampton on Tuesday.

Smith told BBC Sussex: "It's the biggest game I've played in. It's good to get praised by the manager.

"We've got loads of good midfield players but as long as I do my best I can get myself in the team."

The former Crystal Palace youngster started the first three league games this season, but since then has been limited to six appearances off the bench.

He said: "It's not always nice being sub every week. Last season I played two games so this season I've done a lot better.

"When you play a few games and play in the big stadiums you want to play as many games as you can."

Brighton welcome FC United of Manchester to Withdean Stadium this weekend in the FA Cup second round.

"It's a big game to play in. If we get through I'd love to go and play at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge," he said.

"It's what everyone wants to do."
