Brighton chairman Dick Knight has revealed that his club missed out on three strikers in January.
"Hull's Nicky Forster was available and we bid £100,000 but after his recent form we were told he was no longer for sale," Knight told his club's website.
"I also bid £150,000 for Millwall's Darren Byfield and upped it to £165,000 but then they wanted around £300,000.
"I also had a £150,000 bid accepted by Port Vale for Leon Constantine but he has decided to stay at Vale Park."
Knight added: "Constantine is 28 years old and wants to see out his contract to the end of the season and then move to a Championship club during the summer.
"Albion fans will see that Dean Wilkins and I have made massive efforts to bring in quality experienced strikers, with the club being prepared to pay big money for the right player."
