Michael O'Neill has left his post as Brechin City boss to become the new manager of Shamrock Rovers.

O'Neill spent over two years with the Scottish Second Division side, who currently sit third in the table.

The 39-year-old told Brechin's official website: "I will forever be grateful to the club for giving me the opportunity to manage."

Grant Johnstone and Kevin McAllister will take charge of first-team affairs on a temporary basis.

Former Northern Ireland international O'Neill played for several Scottish and English clubs before beginning his managerial career at Glebe Park in 2006.

"The events of the last few days have been very difficult as I have had a fantastic two-and-a-half years at Brechin City," said O'Neill.

"I believe the club is now in a great position to progress with an excellent squad of players.

"The decision to relocate to Ireland is based on both personal and professional reasons and I feel it is in the best interests of my family to take this opportunity now.

"Brechin City is a special club and I would like to wish the players, backroom staff, the committee and the supporters all the best for the future."

I am sure there are a number of managers out there who will want to pick up from where Michael left off

Brechin chairman Ken Ferguson

Chairman Ken Ferguson was full of praise for his departing manager.

"The club recognise the excellent job Michael has done," said Ferguson.

"He has improved the squad greatly and allowed the players to express themselves with a flowing and attacking style of play.

"His personality and business acumen were an asset to the club. He will be sorely missed, especially at such a crucial stage of the season.

"The club will now take stock. We plan to move quickly to find a replacement.

"I am sure there are a number of managers out there who will want to pick up from where Michael left off."

O'Neill was linked with the recent vacancy at Dundee before Jocky Scott returned to Dens Park for a third spell as manager.

Rovers finished in eighth position in last season's Eircom League Premier Division.
