Bradford City slam fans over memorial pitch invasion

Bradford City

Bradford City officials have criticised some fans for their "totally unacceptable" behaviour after Saturday's game against Northampton.

A tribute was held to the 56 people who died in the Valley Parade fire 25 years ago but the mood was wrecked when home fans taunted the visiting supporters.

A statement issued by Bradford read: "Club officials were delighted at the gracious response of visiting fans.

"For those supporters then to be abused and threatened is unacceptable."

Northampton supporters had bought commemorative t-shirts and placed flowers, scarves and pennants on the club memorial.

One coach load even held a raffle which raised more than £100 for the local hospital's Burns Unit Appeal.

But after the final whistle, a small group from the Bradford section ran on the pitch to confront away fans at the opposite end.

The club will be issuing an apology in the Northampton Town match programme and on the club's website.

"The BBC's Football Focus feature earlier in the day captured the significance of the day for the club as it approaches the 25th anniversary of the Bradford City fire disaster," the statement continued.

"How any football fan watching that programme can fail to be affected by the tragedy and significance of what happened . . . is beyond belief.

"Northampton Town fans and fans from other clubs have shown their respect for Bradford City and its supporters. For a significant minority to behave in the way they did is unacceptable."

Bradford have promised to scour CCTV footage of Saturday's game and issue banning orders against any individuals who can be identified as being on the pitch at the end of the game.
