Bradford close to Summerbee signing
Nicky Summerbee
Nicky Summerbee (left): Still to agree personal terms
Bradford are on the verge of signing right winger Nicky Summerbee after agreeing a fee of 1.5m with Sunderland.

Chairman Geoffrey Richmond and manager Chris Hutchings were forced to turn their attentions to Summerbee after failing to lure Sheffield Wednesday's Niclas Alexandersson to Valley Parade .

Bradford were prepared to pay Wednesday 2.75million for the Swedish international, but Alexandersson was not keen on becoming embroiled in another relegation battle and moved to Everton for 2.5million.

The Bantams quickly contacted Sunderland and thrashed out a deal for Summerbee, who is now set to hold talks about personal terms.

Proven experience

Richmond, who agreed the fee with his Sunderland counterpart Bob Murray before holding talks with the player's agent, said: "Nobody is counting chickens because as you know, agreeing a fee with the club is one thing while agreeing terms with the player is another.

"But the policy we have set is to sign players of proven Premiership experience and Nicky certainly falls into that classification.

"I'm hoping we can get Nicky because he is a great crosser of the ball. Last year we only had Peter Beagrie who could put the ball into the box with any real quality," Hutchings added.

If Summerbee moves to Bradford he will become Hutchings' fourth signing in under three weeks.

He has already captured David Hopkin from Leeds for a club record 2.5million and Peter Atherton and Ian Nolan on Bosman free transfers from Sheffield Wednesday.

Summerbee, 28, started his career at Swindon, moved on to Manchester City and then joined Sunderland for 1million, making 108 appearances and scoring eight goals for the Wearsiders.

Summerbee made 35 appearances last season, but was dropped in the aftermath of an alleged training ground bust-up with Chris Makin and boss Peter Reid.
