Intertoto Cup second round, first-leg

FK Atlantas 1-3 Bradford

Chris Hutchings celebrated his first match in charge of Bradford with a 3-1 win over Lithuania's FK Atlantas in the second round first-leg of the Intertoto Cup.

Goals from striker Isaiah Rankin in the ninth minute were followed up by efforts from midfielder Dean Windass and a Robbie Blake penalty to make Hutchings team favourites to progress.

The new manager at Valley Parade had little time to prepare his side for their European trip, with many of the players only recently having come back from holiday after finding out that they were going to be involved in the competition, which a number teams take part in to qualify for the Uefa Cup.

Their Baltic opponents have been described as being on a par with English Conference teams, although wins their last seven games meant that they were carrying over some good form.

A capacity crowd of 3,500 in the dilapidated Zalgiris Stadium saw the home side fall behind early on as Rankin latched on to a Windass pass after Blake had flicked on a Wayne Jacobs free kick.

But to Bradford's surprise FK Atlantas earned a penalty after Ashley Westwood tackled Darius Karalius after 26 minutes.

Striker Edvinas Lukosevicius stepped up to the spot to send goalkeeper Aidan Davison the wrong way.

But seven minutes before the interval Windass curled in a 20-yard free kick and with 16 minutes remaining of the game FK Atlantas' Ivan Osipov brought Rankin inside the area leaving Blake to covert the third.
