McLaughlin to stay at Bradford

Bradford City

Bradford reserve keeper Jon McLaughlin is staying at Valley Parade after accepting a new one-year deal.

The 21-year-old only made his first-team debut at Chesterfield on the final day of the season.

Although first-choice keeper Rhys Evans has since left the club, McLaughlin told the Telegraph & Argus he is not guaranteed more first-team action.

"I'm wanting to see how I can go further this season and looking to get involved as much as I can," he said.

Manager Stuart McCall has had to slash his wage budget and could use the loan market to get a more experienced goalkeeper in.

McLaughlin said: "With the position we're going to be in this season, it makes a lot of sense if we can get someone from a higher division on loan.

I feel like I'm in a place to start a full career out of this now

"It keeps the costs down and we can get someone with experience. But, having made my debut now, I know I can compete at that level at least."

Whether he has another long wait in front of him before tasting league action again, the former Harrogate Town player is just happy to have decided his short-term future.

"Last year, it was just great at that time to be getting a professional contract and moving from non-league to life as a first year professional," he said.

"It's been a good year too. I've taken my time getting into it, the full-time training and all that, but now it's great to be offered this new contract.

"I feel like I'm in a place to start a full career out of this now; it just wasn't a one-year thing."
