Young set for Dean Court farewell

Young had a loan spell at Weymouth earlier this season

Bournemouth veteran defender Neil Young is set for an emotional farewell to Dean Court this Saturday against Crewe after 14 years at the club.

The 34-year-old has played over 500 times since joining from Spurs, but will retire this summer.

Young, who has not scored since 1998, told BBC Radio Solent: "It's come as a bit of a shock as it's gone so quickly.

"There's only a few who started with me still playing so I think it's a credit I'm still going."

Bournemouth need a win against Crewe to guarantee a chance of survival on the final day of the season, but would be relegated from League One if they lose.

Young said: "I've been out with an injury recently and glad just to still be involved. I've come on as sub in the last two games and hopefully I can make it three and keep the team up."

He will be a massive loss to Bournemouth, both in the dressing room, and just generally around the place

Bournemouth legend Steve Fletcher
Young, who is going to coach at a soccer school in Australia, admits he has had highs and lows during his time on the south coast.

"Making my debut, promotion - I forget about relegation and don't want that to happen again. And obviously playing at Wembley, which was my boyhood dream," he said.

"To everyone involved at the club, fans, backroom staff and everyone I've come across, I just want to say a big, big thank you."

Bournemouth's leading appearance maker Steve Fletcher - now with Chesterfield - is sad that his friend and former team-mate Young will not break his club record.

"He's a top bloke as everyone knows, he's held in such high regard," Fletcher said.

"If he wasn't going to Australia he would have broken my record, one that I'm extremely proud of. I would've been gutted about that, but if there's anyone I'd want to lose it to, it would be Neil Young.

"He's my closest friend both inside and outside of the game. He will be a massive loss to Bournemouth, both in the dressing room, and just generally around the place."
