Vokes unfazed by big club scouts

Vokes is attracting interest from Newcastle, Aston Villa and Celtic

Wales striker Sam Vokes insists the interest of two Premier League clubs as well Celtic "does not bother him".

Newcastle United boss Kevin Keegan has been linked with the Bournemouth rookie while Aston Villa and Celtic are also monitoring the 18-year-old's progress.

But Vokes said: "I've heard what has been said and while the interest is flattering, I'm not thinking about it.

"I've put it at the back of my mind as so long as I continue scoring goals, everything will take care of itself."

Vokes has impressed in his first full season since graduating from Bournemouth's youth academy and has scored 11 goals in a struggling team.

The relegation-threatened League One side are suffering a cash crisis with 4m of debt and Bournemouth have been placed into administration.

So exciting teenage star Vokes could leave for the Premiership in the summer on the cheap.

"I've spoken to the boss Kevin Bond about the interest," admits Vokes.

"But I'm a Bournemouth player at the moment and I've showed that I'm not worried about the interest as I've continued scoring goals."

Vokes made a sensation start to his international career as he scored inside 36 seconds of his Wales Under-21 debut against Northern Ireland in February, 2007.

Vokes also scored in Wales' 4-3 win against Sweden as Brian Flynn's Group 10 leaders bid to qualify for the 2009 UEFA European Championship finals in Sweden.

Bournemouth, though, were punished with a statutory 10-point deduction from the Football League after going into administration.

"Survival is almost impossible when a team have been deducted ten points," admits Vokes.

"But we've got to get on with the job.

"The manager put great faith in me as he played me when I was just a kid and I want to repay him.

"I'm pleased on a personal level to be performing OK, now I must ensure I take my form onto the international stage."

Vokes is set to start for Wales in their crucial under-21 Euro qualifier in Bosnia on Wednesday.
