Manager Sean O'Driscoll was concerned at Bournemouth's defensive lapses after their 2-2 draw with Walsall.
"It's going to be a long, hard season if we keep going 2-0 down before we can get back into games and score two goals at home," O'Driscoll said.
"Walsall are one of the smallest sides we'll face, but we've conceded goals where I don't think we should have.
"We knew Paul Merson would be a major threat, and it's no coincidence that when he came off, we scored twice."
Asked if he was pleased with goalscorer Wade Elliott's performance, the Cherries boss added: "It's about time.
"He's had a season and a half where he's not done it, we've kept telling him and telling him, and the crowd have been patient with him and really want him to do it.
"But he's been great in pre-season, he's got the bit between his teeth.
"He's set the standard now. He's done his job, he's got the ball in the box and it's the forwards' job to make more of the service he provides."
