Boston United have released striker Noel Whelan, 31, and keeper Nathan Abbey, 27, from their York Street contracts by mutual consent.
Whelan joined Boston from Aberdeen last summer but has recently been receiving treatment for an alcohol problem.
"Noel has a big personal fight on his hands and that is his priority," boss Steve Evans told Boston's website.
"He made the request in the hope that when he is ready to return to football he can have a fresh start."
Abbey, 27, made 61 appearances for the Pilgrims after signing in July 2004, and recently had a spell on loan at Leyton Orient.
