Bolton sign Real Madrid defender Marco Alonso

Bolton Wanderers

Bolton have signed teenage defender Marco Alonso from Real Madrid on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 19-year-old left-back broke into the Real first-team last season, making his debut in a 2-0 victory over Racing Santander in April.

"He is an exciting young player and we have a real talent on our hands," said boss Owen Coyle.

"He isn't the finished article but you don't get through at Real Madrid without having a bit about you."

Coyle revealed that Alonso had turned down the chance to go to Benfica in favour of a move to the Reebok Stadium.

"His agents, his family were as good as their word," he said.

"When a club with the stature of Benfica comes along it's obviously going to turn your head. But all throughout they gave me the commitment Marcos wanted to come to Bolton.

"It's a terrific piece of business to pull this off."

Alonso said: "It was difficult to leave Real because they are one of the best clubs in the world.

"But I think it is difficult to play at the top in Real.

"To come to Bolton is a very good move. Maybe I could have stayed and played with the first team, but I don't know.

"It's very difficult. But here at Bolton, if I work very hard, I have the possibility to play in the first team."

Alonso is not match-fit after an ankle injury and Coyle will not rush him, but the player is confident of being ready for the start of the season next month.

"I will start training on Thursday and I think I will be perfect for the first league match," he said.

Alonso becomes the third player to move to the Reebok Stadium this summer.

Bulgarian midfielder Martin Petrov, 31, joined Bolton on a two-year deal after being released by Manchester City.

And 34-year-old Robbie Blake moved from Burnley following the Clarets' relegation from the Premier League.
