Bolton have signed left-sided midfielder Fabrice Fernandes on a one-year contract.
The 25-year-old Frenchman was released by Southampton in the summer, despite having a year left on his contract.
"The talent and spirit in the camp was one of the main reasons why I joined," Fernandes told the club's website.
Bolton boss Sam Allardyce added: "Fabrice will add depth to our side and being a left-sided player he is a rare commodity in the modern game."
Fernandes arrived in English football when he joined Fulham on loan from Rennes before temporary spells at Rangers and Marseille.
He made a permanent switch to Southampton for £1.1m in December 2001 but has not played for the club since January 2005.
Allardyce added: "Fabrice is a high-energy player who knows the Premiership inside out.
"He has a sweet left foot and an abundance of skill which will complement our talented squad."
