Blackburn defender Phil Jones has signed a five-year contract extension that ties him to the club until 2015.

The 18-year-old has impressed since making his Premier League debut against Chelsea on 21 March, attracting praise from Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

"We are determined to hold on to Phil," said manager Sam Allardyce.

"When you have spent so much time and effort developing a player you want to see the club benefit as much as possible by him playing on the field."

The absence of regular centre-backs Ryan Nelsen and Christopher Samba through a knee injury and suspension respectively prompted Allardyce to promote Jones to the first team.

After making his debut in the 1-1 draw with the league leaders, Jones started Rovers' following six matches, helping his side keep a clean sheet against Manchester United along the way.

"In this little run, he has taken everything in his stride, whether it was Didier Drogba or Dimitar Berbatov," said Allardyce.

"He has such a calm, collected, cool attitude, which is remarkable for someone so young."

Wenger, speaking before his side's 2-1 defeat by Rovers on Monday, described Jones as a "good player" to the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

But the Frenchman said he had not made any enquiry into his availability.
