Salgado adjusting to English life

Blackburn defender Michel Salgado believes he is still someway off getting used to the demands of playing football in England.

The 34-year-old, who joined Rovers from Real Madrid in August, scored his first goal for the club in Tuesday's Carling Cup win over Peterborough.

"I'm still learning to play in England because it's very different," Salgado told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"It was an important goal for me but more important for the team."

The former Spain international began his career with hometown club Celta Vigo.

He joined Real Madrid in 1999, going on to help the La Liga side win the Champions League in his debut season.

We need to show we're not frightened. Normally in games against teams like Manchester United people think you're going to lose

Salgado made 136 league appearances for the Spanish giants before completing a free transfer to Ewood Park in the summer.

"Life over here is perfect for me although English football is very different," he said.

"It's quicker and you have to fight for every ball.

"Normally in Spain you keep the ball more so I now have to learn a different style of play."

Blackburn visit Premier League champions Manchester United at the weekend.

Sam Allardyce's side have lost their previous nine away league games - a run stretching back to March.

"We need to learn to keep the ball more," he said.

"The way other teams play we give the ball away too often and that makes it difficult to play against teams like Chelsea and Arsenal.

"And we need to show we're not frightened," Salgado said.

"Normally in games against teams like Manchester United people think you're going to lose. But we have to show we enjoy playing against them."
