Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce has said he is happy to offer Nathan Ellington the chance to prove he can play at the top level after taking him on trial.

The 28-year-old striker is in the final year of his contract with Watford after a season on loan with Derby, and has been told he can find a new club.

Allardyce said: "I like to try and resurrect somebody.

"This is a lad with a huge amount of talent and has a really good CV from his time particularly at Wigan."

The Rovers boss added: "He's only 28 so whatever went wrong, if we can put things right we'll have a real player on our hands but he has to prove it in the few days he is with us."

Meanwhile, midfielders David Dunn and Vince Grella have been ruled out of the start of the Premier League season on 15 August as niggling injuries have forced both players to miss the majority of the club's pre-season friendlies.

Allardyce said: "It's a growing concern by the fact they've started this pre-season where they left off last.

"We particularly wanted those two players to get through a full pre-season. One because Vince had his first year disrupted by niggles and pulls.

"Dunny ended up missing the back part of last season to get the operation to get fit. Thankfully it's nothing to do with the Achilles tendon, it's only a bit of a thigh but he's missing days where he should be out with the rest of the lads."
