Brad Friedel has signed a new deal that will keep him at Blackburn until 2008.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper, who quit international football with the United States earlier in the year, had 12 months of his present contract to run.
"I'm delighted. I feel the staff we have now are ambitious and they want to take the club forward," Friedel told the Lancashire Evening Telegraph.
"They want to get us up to where we were a few years back when we were fighting for the European places."
Friedel has been in discussions over his contract since March and is already looking beyond the new three-year deal.
"I've always been someone who has tried to keep myself as fit as possible and I think I've probably got four or five good years left in me, so I was very comfortable in committing myself to another three years," added the American.
"At the end of that contract, if we can go on year to year from there then great but, if not, that is fantastic as well."
Friedel moved to Ewood Park on a free transfer from Liverpool in November 2000.
