McLeish hankering after Ferguson
Barry Ferguson
Barry Ferguson has been linked with Rangers and Newcastle
Rangers manager Alex McLeish has again admitted he would love to re-sign former captain Barry Ferguson.

The Scotland midfielder joined Blackburn Rovers last year but has had an indifferent time in England.

And McLeish, who hopes to strengthen his side in January, told Rangers News: "I do things for football reasons.

"And, if I thought everyone was behind it - or at least the majority were - Barry, is a player I would love to have back here."

Rangers are heavily in debt but are hoping for a cash injection before the opening of the transfer window.

Ferguson was taken to Ewood Park by Graeme Souness and reports have also suggested that the 26-year-old could follow his former manager to Newcastle United.

I wouldn't rule anything out

However, Blackburn chief executive John Williams has dismissed the possibility of selling the Scotland captain.

"I can't forget the contribution Barry made to this club, particularly in the year when we won the Treble together," admitted McLeish.

Newcastle defender Aaron Hughes and Finnish midfielder Teemu Tainio, of Uefa Cup group rivals Auxerre, are two more who have been linked with a move to Rangers.

"Regarding names, it's not something I want to share right now," said McLeish.

"Our policy at Ibrox is to say nothing until we have something to say to the Rangers fans.

"Whether that is a possibility, it is difficult to say at the moment.

"We would like to bolster the squad early next year.

"The problem could be who is going to be available.

"I don't see a lot of clubs doing business in the window.

"It's still new to us and I see even Real Madrid say they will not do any business at all.

"I wouldn't rule anything out and I would like to enhance the squad, particularly if we are in a good position at that time."
