Advocaat 'after Rovers job'
Former Holland coach Dick Advocaat
Former Holland coach Dick Advocaat has applied to replace Graeme Souness as Blackburn boss, according to reports.

The former Rangers boss is believed to be one of about 30 applicants, with the Rovers board planning to discuss the issue at a meeting on Thursday.

Wales coach Mark Hughes remains the bookmakers' favourite for the post.

"A number of high quality candidates have thrown their hats into the ring," Rovers chief executive John Williams told the club's website.

He added: "We are now in a position to draw up a shortlist with a view to making an early appointment if possible.

I don't deal in ifs and maybes
Mark Hughes on speculation linking him with the job
"We are probably done now in terms of getting all the names in, although that doesn't mean to say we'll rule out any late enquiries.

"But we know who the runners and riders are and we can now start working on our selection process."

Hughes claimed the speculation was without any foundation on Tuesday.

"Every time a position becomes free, people will link or try to make a link with managers and ex-players," he said.

"I don't deal in ifs and maybes and I don't anticipate that they will call."

Hughes had been linked with a move to Tottenham in the summer but rejected it because would not allow him to continue his role with Wales.

Other contenders are thought to include Gordon Strachan, former Liverpool boss Gerard Houllier and ex-Rangers and Everton manager Walter Smith.

Wigan manager Paul Jewell, Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, Glenn Hoddle and Joe Royle are thought to be the other high-profile candidates being considered.

Meanwhile, Tony Parkes will act as caretaker for a sixth time at Blackburn.
