Souness on a high

Brett Emerton had a superb debut
Emerton was outstanding

Blackburn boss Graeme Souness was a delighted man after watching his team thrash Wolves 5-1 at Ewood Park.

Lorenzo Amoruso and Brett Emerton both scored on their debuts for Blackburn, David Thompson converted from 25 yards and Andy Cole notched twice after coming off the bench.

Steffen Iversen scored for Wolves, but the Premiership new-boys were handed a lesson in finishing by Souness' team, while Emerton was outstanding on debut.

"Emerton is a top player," said the Blackburn boss. "We are very fortunate to have him.

"I stayed in touch with his agent after seeing Brett play for Australia against Scotland.

"I am delighted he decided to join us. If he can keep up that level of performance I will be quite happy.

"I thought Amoruso played well and was majestic at times but I would like to see where he was for their goal."

But overall the Rovers boss was satisfied with his team's start to the season.

"It was a good day for us," said Souness. "Our football in the first 35 minutes was excellent.

"We were inventive and looked really good going forward. The third goal killed them off."
