Birmingham midfielder Keith Fahey has signed a one-year contract extension to keep him at the club at until 2013.

The 27-year-old successfully stepped up to the Premier League last term, which earned him his Republic of Ireland debut in the friendly against Paraguay.

Fahey arrived at St Andrew's in January 2009 from League of Ireland club St Patrick's Athletic.

"Keith has proved to me that he's a Premier League player," Blues manager Alex McLeish told the club's website.

"He is a brilliant lad who is well liked and is a great professional. All of those qualities make him a manager's dream but it shouldn't be forgotten that he's a very good footballer too."

Fahey has seen his career go full circle after being discarded as a youngster by Aston Villa.

"Having had trials that didn't work out they way he would have wanted when he was younger, he is a brilliant example to young players," stressed McLeish.

"If at first you don't succeed you should try and try again. He got a second chance and he grabbed it - his is an inspirational story."
