Barrow close in on summer targets

Barrow have agreed terms with an un-named defender and will begin talks with a midfielder this week.

The Bluebirds have not revealed the defender's identity as the fee is due to be set by a tribunal.

"He's signed his contract," Bayliss told BBC Radio Cumbria. "He's under the age of 24 and he's an excellent prospect for the future.

"We'll also be talking to a midfielder this week as we need a little more strength in that area."

Former Wrexham defender Simon Spender became Barrow's first summer signing last month after agreeing a two-year deal at Holker Street.

The Bluebirds have also agreed new deals with striker Jason Walker, goalkeeper Tim Deasy, winger Carlos Logan, midfielders Mark Boyd and Andy Bond and defender Mike Pearson.

Captain Paul Jones is still thinking over a new one-year deal with the club.

"Talks with Paul are looking positive," Bayliss said. "Our main priority was to keep our skipper."

The club have also revealed that central defender Steve McNulty is set to leave after deciding not to make the move to near full-time status next season.

"It's a blow, he could potentially be a Football League player but he hasn't given himself the opportunity to do that," Bayliss went on.

"He's really let finances rule his head but we've got a wage structure that we can't break.

"Obviously we wanted to keep Steve. People will remember Macca as the best centre-half in Conference North...but the club is bigger than one player."

Bayliss said the club have been in talks with "three or four centre-halves" over the last week.

"We're working really hard and there will be quality players coming into this squad.

"We're also after a centre-forward as well as a couple more players to add to that but we're not going to be rushed."

Bayliss has also re-opened the way for a possible return for striker Lee McEvilly who spent a loan spell at the club at the end of last season.

The Barrow boss last week appeared to close the door on a return for his former Rochdale team-mate.

"He's a player who would be interested in the three days training we will be doing next season."

"But we've got our number one striker who we're after. He's back from his holidays on 4 June and he is going to give us an answer then.

"We've also got a contingency plan if he doesn't sign."
