Barnsley eye Charlton hitman Gray

Championship side Barnsley are interested in signing Charlton striker Andy Gray, reports BBC Radio Sheffield.

The 31-year-old, who joined the Addicks for £750,000 from Burnley in January 2008, still has two years left on his contract at The Valley.

But it is thought that Charlton are keen to offload their highest earners after being relegated to League One.

"We are looking for a big striker, someone who can be a target man," said Barnsley manager Simon Davey.

"We've got Daniel Bogdanavic who is a finisher, Iain Hume who is a finisher and is sharp and good around his feet," Davey added.

"Jon Macken acts as a target man but isn't the biggest and is really a link man, so we need a big striker who can link the other three strikers."

Gray, who has also had spells Sheffield United, Sunderland and Nottingham Forest, is understood to looking for a move back to the north of England.

Meanwhile, Davey has confirmed that the Reds' bid for Liverpool winger Adam Hammill remains on the table.

The 21-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at Oakwell last season, but has returned to Anfield to take part in pre-season training.

"I've made an offer, but they want to look at him during pre-season," said Davey.

"We know we can wait on Adam because he's not going to kill the budget if he signs two days before the season."

Davey added: "We are getting our ducks in a row just case the answer is a negative one."

The Reds have also given trials to former Aberdeen goalkeeper David Preece, ex-Manchester City full-back Chris Ramsey, former Luton striker Dean Morgan and ex-Sheffield United defender Maxime Chanot.

All four players are expected to play a part in either Thursday's friendly away at Buxton or Saturday's game at home to Ferencvaros.
