Barnsley sack Parkin
Steve Parkin
Parkin has failed to turn around the club's fortunes
Crisis-club Barnsley have sacked manager Steve Parkin.

Reserve-team coach Glyn Hodges has been put in charge of first-team affairs at the cash-strapped club with immediate effect.

Parkin took over at Oakwell from Nigel Spackman last November, but failed to prevent the South Yorkshire club from being relegated.

The action which has been taken today is believed to be in the best interests of the club
Barnsley statement

Barnsley dropped out of the Premiership in 1998 after just one year in the top flight before being relegated from the First Division last season.

The Tykes were put into administration last week after the financial future of the club could not be secured.

They are currently 17th in Division Two with just 15 points and are only three points above the relegation zone, having won only four of their opening 13 games.

The 4-1 home defeat by Bristol City on Saturday appears to have been the final straw for chairman John Dennis.

A club statement said: "The administrators of Barnsley Football Club, after consultation with club directors, announce that they have dismissed Steve Parkin from his position as team manager.

"The action which has been taken today is believed to be in the best interests of the club.

"Glyn Hodges, the club's reserve-team coach, will have responsibility for playing matters at the club with immediate effect."

Assistant manager Tony Ford and chief scout Russell Richardson have also been shown the door.

Parkin's dismissal is the fourth in the Nationwide League since last Monday, with Brighton's Martin Hinshelwood, Hull's Jan Molby and Ipswich boss George Burley all shown the door.
