Alpay gets the go ahead to start Villa career
Turkish defender Alpay has been given the green light to begin his Aston Villa career.

The Department for Education and Employment has confirmed he had been granted a work permit.

The permit is for four years, the length of his contract after a 5.6m deal had been agreed with Fenerbahce.

Alpay, 27, has been capped 49 times by Turkey and appeared in all their Euro 2000 matches in the Low Countries.

Expired But he blotted his copybook when he was sent off in the quarter final defeat by Portugal.

Alpay, however, will not be able to play in either the semi-final second leg of the Intertoto Cup next Wednesday or the finals if they go through, as the registration date has expired.

Villa are hoping to overturn a 1-0 deficit against Spanish side Celta Vigo at The Hawthorns.

Before then manager John Gregory takes his team to Wolves on Sunday for Mike Stowell's testimonial match.
