Car crash rules Hendrie out

Lee Hendrie: Lucky to emerge unhurt
Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie will miss the Intertoto Cup match against Czech-side Dukla Pribram after being injured in a car crash.

Although the 23-year-old's Porsche 911 was written-off, he was not seriously hurt.

The accident occured as Hendrie was driving to meet the Villa coach bound for Heathrow airport on Saturday morning.

He collided with another vehicle near Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham at about 7.55am.

Unscathed

The other driver also emerged unscathed.

Hendrie, who lives in Solihull, West Midlands, was taken to Birmingham's City Hospital, but was later discharged.

His father Paul, who manages Dr Marten's League side Tamworth, said his son was lucky to be alive.

"When you think that the car is a write-off, it shows what a lucky lad he is.

"He's shaken up but his limbs and everything else are fine. It's a huge relief."

Hendrie has represented England at under-21 level and has one senior cap as a substitute last year.

He had an injury-hit season last season after tearing ligaments in both ankles in December and in his comeback game a month later.
