Aston Villa's England under-21 winger Gabriel Agbonlahor has signed a new four-year contract
Agbonlahor has taken his chance, according to Villa boss O'Neill
Agbonlahor, 20, signed a new deal 12 months ago but his form this season has earned him an improved contract.
The youngster was on target in Villa's 1-1 draw with Everton on Monday and boss Martin O'Neill said: "Gabby has been superb for us this season.
"Like with any young player he has had the occasional up and down, but overall he has been excellent."
O'Neill added: "I keep repeating myself but I am sure Gabby would have been more than content with playing maybe 12 to 15 games at the start of the season.
"But he has done remarkably well and until I substituted him at Reading in February he has played every minute of every game.
"There has been the occasional time when I would have liked to rest him but that was not possible because of the lack of numbers."
Until I speak to the agents to see what is happening, anything can crop up. I wouldn't be complacent about anything
Martin O'Neill on trying to clinch new deals with Gavin McCann and Olof Mellberg
O'Neill is also hoping to clinch new deals with midfielder Gavin McCann and central defender Olof Mellberg.
Mellberg has declared he wants to stay at Villa Park but McCann has refused to talk about a new contract.
O'Neill stated: "Until I speak to the agents to see what is happening, anything can crop up. I wouldn't be complacent about anything."
The Villa boss insisted his first aim is to sort out the futures of current Villa players before looking to strengthen his side.
O'Neill, who has been linked with Liverpool striker Craig Bellamy, said: "I'd like to sort out our boys already here before I go further with anything else, which I intend to do over the next fortnight."
