New deal for Edwards
Villa boss Graham Taylor and assistants John Deehan and Stuart Gray
Edwards has impressed Villa's management team
Aston Villa defender Rob Edwards has signed a new two-and-a-half-year contract with the Midlands outfit.

The promising 20-year-old has played in the Villain's last three matches at right-back.

And he saluted Villa manager Graham Taylor for giving him and other youngsters the chance at first-team level.

There's definitely something special happening here at Villa Park

"It's fair to say I might have been on my way out of the club in the summer. I had a bit of a bad time with injuries, and it didn't go well," Edwards said.

"But this year I've been able to play most of the games for the reserves and have now been in the first team, and things have turned around quickly for me.

"I'm very grateful to the manager and the coaches who have stuck with me."

"There's definitely something special happening here at Villa Park.

"I think the lads showed that by winning the FA Youth Cup last season. There's a lot of talent at the club."

In other Villa news, Taylor is likely to insist on recouping the majority of the 5.6m they paid for defender Alpay if they are to part company with the Turkey international.

Villa chairman Doug Ellis is believed to have rejected a 2m offer from Blackburn for the transfer-listed player.
