Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas faces three-week lay-off

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas will be sidelined for up to three weeks because of a hamstring injury.

Midfielder Fabregas, 23, limped off after half an hour of Saturday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Sunderland, having scored the 13th-minute opener.

A statement on the club's website read: "Arsenal Football Club have confirmed that Cesc Fabregas will be out for two to three weeks.

"The extent of the injury was discovered after a scan on Monday."

Fabregas will miss Tuesday's Carling Cup tie at north London rivals Tottenham, the Champions League group match at Partizan Belgrade a week later and the Premier League trip to West Brom.

He is also a major doubt for the visit to league leaders Chelsea on 3 October as well as Spain's Euro 2010 clash with Lithuania five days later.

Fabregas appeared to be relaxed about the problem when he posted a message on Monday on his official Twitter page, which read: "Good news on my injury. I have some fluid but nothing bad in the muscle. I hope I can be playing in two weeks."

He had opened the scoring at the Stadium of Light with a bizarre goal, when Anton Ferdinand's attempted clearance bounced off the Spaniard and looped into the net.

Sunderland levelled through Darren Bent in the fifth minute of stoppage-time, much to the annoyance of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

The Frenchman has accepted a charge of improper conduct and will serve a one-match ban after appearing to confront fourth official Martin Atkinson about the amount of time played.

Wenger has seen his side's start to the campaign blighted by injuries, with Fabregas joining Theo Walcott, Nicklas Bendtner and Robin van Persie on the sidelines.
