Wenger is worried about the sums of money coming into the game

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has claimed that the club might soon be unable to compete successfully for honours.

Wenger is concerned at the increasing number of clubs who have an owner or chairman who is prepared to use their personal wealth to bankroll their team.

He said: "If clubs aren't run according to their natural resources and £100m or more is put in then you cannot compete.

"Only Chelsea have those resources now but once three or four clubs do, then the pressures will be too big."

Wenger added: "Today the players say 'I earn less than at Chelsea', but it is only one club.

"Once that becomes the price of the market then you are in trouble because you cannot compete at all.

"When this kind of pressure is multiplied by three, four or five then you have no choice."

Wenger also has reservations about investors who want to treat football clubs as a way of making cash quickly.

Although that does not seem to be the case at Chelsea, with Roman Abramovich at the helm, Wenger feels that situation is unique.

And it is yet to be seen how Aston Villa will fare under US tycoon Randy Lerner and how West Ham will be affected by Eggert Magnusson's takeover.

"To find people who are prepared to put £100m, £200m or £800m into a club and is prepared to lose it then you must be lucky," Wenger added.

"For me Abramovich looks to be in a different world financially because if he loses his investment it is peanuts for him.

"You do not find many people like that."
