Greater Manchester Police are looking at a claim that Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann kicked a bottle at Manchester United fans at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The German international was accused of booting the bottle into the East Stand during the Gunners' 1-0 win.
"Police have received one complaint in relation to an allegation. Officers are investigating and inquiries are ongoing," said a police spokesman.
Emmanuel Adebayor's late goal inflicted United's first defeat of the season.
In recent years, matches between the two sides have seen stormy scenes on and off the pitch.
In 2004, slices of pizza were thrown in the players' tunnel after Arsenal lost 2-0 at Old Trafford.
A year earlier, Arsenal defender Martin Keown was fined £5,000 after his spat with United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy during a 0-0 draw.
