Double snub for Gunners
PSV Eindhoven midfielder Mark van Bommel
Van Bommel has been a long-term Arsenal target
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has suffered a double blow to his hopes of bolstering the champions' midfield.

PSV Eindhoven have dismissed the Gunners' latest approach for Mark van Bommel.

And Valencia have made it clear that the Double winners will have to pay big money if they want to take Argentine international Kily Gonzalez to Highbury.

Wenger's need for more midfield resources has been intensified by mounting injury problems.

The continued absence of Robert Pires with a knee injury has been compunded by news that a hip problem is likely to rule out Freddie Ljungberg for the first three months of the season.

PSV do not exist to solve Arsenal's problems

But the Arsenal manager's latest attempt to land top target Van Bommel has been rebuffed by PSV.

Wenger reportedly offered Nigeria forward Kanu plus cash for the 24-year-old Holland international.

But PSV chairman Harry van Raaij told the Daily Mail newspaper: "What do I want with Kanu when I have Kezman, Venegoor of Hesselink, Bruggink and De Jong?

"PSV do not exist to solve Arsenal's problems."

The Gunners could now turn their attentions to Valencia's Gonzalez.

But they have been warned by the Spanish champions that the left-sided midfielder will not be available on the cheap.

Valencia's Kily Gonzalez
Kily Gonzalez would cost Arsenal more than £10m
It is believed that it would take a bid of more than £10m to tempt Valencia into selling.

Wenger must decide if he can afford to spend such a large chunk of his summer transfer budget on one player.

Valencia chairman Jaume Orti said: "We are aware of Arsenal's interest in Kily Gonzalez.

"But if nobody can match our valuation of the player he will remain with Valencia, where he is a very important member of the team.

"We are not going to compromise on a player of Kily Gonzalez's stature."
