New deal for Pires
Robert Pires clutches his knee during the FA Cup quarter-final against Newcastle
Contract talks were put on hold by Pires' knee injury
Robert Pires says he is ready to sign a new contract with Arsenal.

Pires was in talks about an extension to his current deal when he suffered a knee injury during the FA Cup quarter-final replay win over Newcastle in March.

The injury cut short his season and forced him to miss France's World Cup campaign.

But the Football Writers' Player of the Year is keen to commit his future to the Double winners.

"I would still like to sign an extension. I will be seeing the manager this week and I cannot see any problem," said Pires.

"Arsenal want me to stay and I want to stay at the club. Hopefully, it will be sorted out very soon."

Pires is currently undergoing rehabilitation at a sports clinic in St Raphael in the south of France.

He has two years left on his current deal and plans to extend it by a further year after talks with boss Arsene Wenger this week.

"For the last few months I have been concentrating on getting back to fitness," Pires told the Evening Standard newspaper.

"It has gone really well and I am ahead of where I should be at this stage.

"Hopefully, I will be able to come back to Arsenal for treatment at the beginning of next month."

Meanwhile, Lille defender Pascal Cygan has confirmed that he is keen to sign for Arsenal.

"Since I visited the facilities at Arsenal I really want to go there," said Cygan.
