New Aldershot boss Holdsworth ready for League test

New Aldershot manager Dean Holdsworth is confident he can make the step up to League Two in his new role.

The 42-year-old was aiming for a second consecutive promotion with Blue Square Bet Premier Newport County but has now left for 20th-placed Shots.

Holdsworth told BBC Surrey: "I've been rolling my sleeves up for two and a half years and now I want to roll them up again at a new club.

"It's a special time. I'm really excited by it, I really am."

Holdsworth added that his own record as a striker with Bolton and Wimbledon will give him the experience he needs to manage at the new level.

We will add one or two players into the squad and those players will have the right mentality

"I played 800 games and scored 300 goals," he said. "That's league experience.

"I played under some great managers, and under a few bad ones as well. There'll be a bit of them in me and that's experience.

"It's about players believing and a player's ability coming through on the pitch. And if they believe, they'll buy into it and we'll win football matches."

An immediate transfer target for Holdsworth was expected to be his prolific striker at Newport County Craig Reid.

But the new Shots boss said: "He will play in the league without a doubt, he's a fantastic lad.

"But could he come here? Not at this moment in time. I think he's out of the price range at the moment.

"We will add one or two players into the squad, and those players will have the right mentality to come into this club and build on my beliefs.

"It's almost a written bible that we have certain methods and certain ways of professionalism, and a code of conduct, and we abide by that."
