Aberdeen striker Chris Maguire admits to surprise at being named the best young player in the Scottish Premier League during September.

The 21-year-old ended a mixed month for the Dons - they lost two and drew one of their league matches - by scoring in a 3-2 defeat at home to Rangers.

"I didn't expect it, it was totally out of the blue," he told the Dons website.

"Yeah, it's great to get recognised for playing well, but when I found out I was a bit surprised to be honest."

Maguire was sent out on loan to Scottish Premier League rivals Kilmarnock for the second half of last season by manager Mark McGhee but has been a regular starter this term.

The more you play, the more your confidence is boosted

And this week he is with Billy Stark's Scotland squad preparing for Thursday's Uefa Under-21 Championship play-off first leg against Iceland in Reykjavik.

"I think it helps to be involved every week," said the Clydesdale Bank award winner, who also helped Aberdeen defeat Raith Rovers in the Co-operative Insurance Cup during September.

"The more you play, the more your confidence is boosted.

"I feel I've been more consistent this season because I've been playing every game and hopefully people watching will see that.

"I think the manager has been pleased - well, I hope he has.

"I must be doing something right if I keep playing each week. But, again, it's just nice to be playing and going out there scoring goals to help the team."
