Evan Horwood has joined Hartlepool United on their pre-season trip to the Netherlands, but Aberdeen remain interested in the left-back.

The 24-year-old was released after two and a half seasons with Carlisle United in League One.

And the former Gretna defender trained with Aberdeen on Friday.

But he had already agreed to join United on their pre-season trip and the Dons hope he will continue his trial with them when he returns to the UK.

Aberdeen realise he could sign for the League One club in the meantime but hope that the lure of a second spell in the SPL will persuade Horwood to return.

He joins former Gretna midfielder Fabian Yantorno on trial with Hartlepool.

Horwood had a six-month loan spell with the Scottish club while at Sheffield United, after which he moved to Carlisle on a free transfer.

A product of Sheffield United's youth system, he had only made one appearance, as a substitute, for the Blades' first team.

But Horwood had loan spells with Scunthorpe United, York City, Chester City and Darlington before heading for Gretna.

He made 17 appearances during the Black and White's one and only season in Scotland's top flight and, although he was not offered a new deal by manager Greg Abbott, he was a regular starter for Carlisle last term.

Horwood went on to make more than 90 appearances for the Cumbrians but was not offered a new contract.

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee is looking for a left-sided replacement for the versatile Charlie Mulgrew, who left for Celtic at the end of his contract, and Davide Grassi, who preferred to join Italian third-tier outfit Sorrento Calcio.

Horwood joins 18-year-old former West Ham United youth midfielder Conor Okus on trial at Pittodrie.

Northern Ireland striker Josh Magennis has already won a contract after leaving Cardiff City.

However, former Leeds United goalkeeper Ryan Jones has returned to England after only five days in Aberdeen.

The 18-year-old came through Liverpool's academy then moved to Wigan Athletic before spending last season on the bench at Leeds.

McGhee is looking for a new goalkeeper after Stuart Nelson, who spent last season as back-up to Jamie Langfield, rejected a new contract and joined Notts County.
