Defender McNamara exits Aberdeen

McNamara has decided to leave Pittodrie prematurely

Aberdeen defender Jackie McNamara has been released from his contract at Pittodrie, the club have announced.

The former Celtic captain - who had a year left on his deal - joined the Dons last summer after a spell at Wolves.

Boss Jimmy Calderwood told the club's website: "Between travelling and injuries it's been a frustrating spell for him and he's decided to leave.

"He is a great professional and it has been a pleasure to work with him. He'll certainly be a big loss."

The 34-year-old, capped 34 times for Scotland has had his career hampered by injuries.

However, the full-back has indicated that he would like to continue playing.

"I'd like to keep playing for another year and I'm also interested in doing some coaching," he told The Scotsman.

"My main aim now is to be able to enjoy my football, whether it is playing, coaching or both."
