Calderwood blast for beaten Dons

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood
Calderwood's side lost their second cup semi-final

Jimmy Calderwood was left seething after his Aberdeen side lost their second cup semi-final of the season.

"Semi-final defeats are the hardest to take," he said after the 4-3 defeat by First Division side Queen of the South.

"We brought 14,000 people here. We let them down at Tynecastle in the CIS Cup and we've let them down again.

"We started poorly and the whole game we were definitely poor as a team and got what we deserved. Good luck to Queen of the South in the final."

Shell-shocked Calderwood described his side as a "joke" and admitted he understood the actions of those Dons fans who threw their scarves on to the Hampden track at the final whistle.

"You can understand their frustration - if I was a supporter I would have done the exact same," Calderwood said.

It was the second time the Pittodrie side had lost four goals in a cup semi-final this season.

They lost 4-1 to Dundee United at Tynecastle in the CIS Insurance Cup.

"It was a massive, massive disappointment, one of the worst moments of my career and I hope my players are feeling the same," Calderwood continued.

"For some strange reason Queens were better than us and defensively we were awful, as we have been all season.

"If defeat was down to an individual mistake or a refereeing mistake then you can handle it.

"But losing four goals in any game at this level is a joke and to do it in a semi-final again is no good."

Calderwood, who is set to instigate a clear-out at Pittodrie at the end of the season, added: "I said to the players that this will never leave them, it's always going to be there.

"In 10 years and 20 years' time they will think, 'what a chance I had' and they might never get that chance again.

"Take nothing away from Queen of the South but they didn't have to work hard to get their goals.

"We've done well in Europe but our league form has been awful and we have taken that into two semi-finals.

"As a team we have failed badly."
