SPL rejects Dons' fixture switch
Aberdeen have failed in a bid to have Saturday's Scottish Premier League fixture against Motherwell postponed ahead of a vital Uefa Cup tie.

Rangers' had Sunday's match against Gretna postponed before Wednesday's Champions League tie against Lyon after their opponents agreed to the request.

But Motherwell opposed the Dons' attempt to have their game delayed.

Aberdeen must beat Copenhagen on Thursday 20 December to qualify from Group B and move into the last 32.

An SPL spokesman said: "We did receive a request from Aberdeen this morning and it was considered this afternoon.

"And, weighing up all the factors, we informed Aberdeen that the fixture will be going ahead as planned."

Aberdeen are not due to play their Uefa Cup match until next Thursday, which we believe is a sufficiently long gap between games

Motherwell statement

Motherwell explained the reasoning behind their opposition.

"While we wish Aberdeen every success next week in the Uefa Cup, Motherwell Football Club could not agree to the request," said a club spokesman.

"This was a matter ultimately for the SPL, but the postponement of a Saturday match to a midweek date would significantly affect attendance at the fixture and would inconvenience supporters.

Setanta Sports had expressed fears that the decision to postpone Rangers' game could damage the league's credibility and set a dangerous precedent.

Aberdeen officials, who had made the request because of the club's lengthy injury list, were keen to avoid a war of words over the incident.

"Obviously we are disappointed, but we just have to get on with it," said a spokesman.

Aberdeen and Motherwell clashed over a fixture date earlier this year.

The Dons asked at short notice to move their SPL fixture at Fir Park from Saturday 20 January because of their Scottish Cup replay against Hibernian two days earlier.

Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood branded Motherwell an "absolute disgrace" after they refused to switch the game to the Sunday.

But Well claimed that would have cost them about 30,000 and the row died down after the match was postponed on the morning of the game because of a waterlogged pitch.
