Smith wants to stay with the Pittodrie club

Aberdeen midfielder Jamie Smith has revealed that he would like to extend his stay at Pittodrie and not end it.

Dons boss Jimmy Calderwood had expressed concern last week that he would lose Smith for nothing when the transfer window opens next month.

"I would like to stay at Aberdeen, so hopefully we can get something sorted out," Smith told the Evening Express.

"My main priority is to stay at Aberdeen and the manager has said that is what he wants as well."

Smith's season has been blighted by injury, but he made a late appearance from the bench in the 1-0 defeat to Celtic at Parkhead.

"I hope we can come to an agreement as I have absolutely no thoughts about leaving at all," he added.

"I'm an Aberdeen player and I have always stated that I would love to stay at the club.

"I'm happy playing for Aberdeen and I even tried to get the ball rolling about a new contract earlier this year.

"My family are also happy in the area but sometimes things take a little longer than expected to sort out."

Calderwood had claimed that negotiations had stalled with Smith, who arrived from Dutch club Den Haag at the beginning of last season.

He went on to score nine goals but injury has restricted him to just one so far this term.

"At the moment it looks about 50/50 if Jamie will sign a new deal," Calderwood had said.

"He is free to talk to other people from 1 January so there is the fear that he could arrange to go for a free in a month."

Top scorer Darren Mackie, midfielder Gary Dempsey and defender Andrew Considine are also out of contract at the end of the season.
