Aberdeen have signed midfielder Neil MacFarlane after negotiating his early release from Hearts.
MacFarlane has made only two starts for Hearts this season
The 28-year-old former Airdrie and Queen's Park man has agreed a deal until the end of the season.
He had made just two starts under George Burley, then his successor as Hearts boss, Graham Rix - and was told he was surplus to requirements.
But he goes straight into the Pittodrie squad for Saturday's SPL match at home to Kilmarnock.
Dons manager Jimmy Calderwood hopes MacFarlane and fellow new signing Danny Griffin can add some steel to the side.
He said: "Danny and Neil are both good, honest professionals who know what the Scottish game is all about.
"After we lost Markus Heikkinen to Luton and with Scott Severin being injured this season, perhaps we have been lacking that type of player.
"Hopefully, they can both shore up the midfield area a bit, halt any counter-attacks and allow the attacking players to create more goalscoring opportunities."
MacFarlane had a proposed transfer to Dundee United fall through at the last minute in August.
