Dundee draw at Tynecastle

Hearts 1-1 Dundee

Hearts and Dundee will have to meet again in the Scottish Cup after an entertaining draw at Tynecastle.

The home side dominated much of the match but were behind to a Juan Sara goal after half an hour and had to wait until nine minutes from time to snatch an equaliser, courtesy of former Barcelona man Juanjo.

Hearts squandered a number of good chances throughout the game, and captain Colin Cameron had a penalty kick saved just moments after the visitors had gone ahead.

Hearts started with Austin McCann making his debut in the leftback position following his 50,000 signing from Airdrie.

Dangerous position

The home side started brightly and forced two early corners. After nine minutes Dundee's Barry Smith was caught in possession in a dangerous position, but goalkeeper Marco Roccati was alert to the situation and quickly cleared the danger.

Robert Tomaschek set up Colin Cameron and the Scotland international midfielder fired just over the top from 20 yards.

There were some ugly scenes when Dundee felt aggrieved that Hearts didn't knock the ball out of play after Beto Carranza had fallen awkwardly and referee Hugh Dallas had to separate a cluster of quarreling players.

On the half-hour the visitors took the lead when Carranza sent in a free-kick from the left which Claudio Caniggia touched on and Sara fired home from close range.

Perfect opportunity

Within 90 seconds Hearts were awarded the perfect opportunity to draw level when Dundee defender Chris Coyne tripped Steven Boyack in the box.

However, Cameron had his spot kick superbly saved by Roccati.

Stephane Adam got to the rebound first but his shot was blocked and cleared in the mass of bodies.

Hearts went very close in the 35th minute when Juanjo's spectacular right-foot volley scrapped just over the crossbar.

Powerful drive

Hearts were very positive in the early stages of the second half and Cameron had a powerful drive charged down, then Smith did well to clear a Boyack cross aimed for McSwegan.

On 57 minutes, Gary McSwegan was substituted for Gary Wales who was making his first appearance in 10 months as a result of long-term injury.

On the hour mark, after a frantic goal-mouth scramble, Juanjo appeared ready to equalise but somehow lifted a close-range effort over the bar with the goal gaping.

The unlucky Wales pulled his hamstring just eight minutes after coming on and was replaced by Grant Murray.

In the 81st minute Hearts' pressure was rewarded when Juanjo coolly finished to draw the sides level.
