By Keir Murray

1308: Maurice Edu dinks a lovely ball towards the edge of the United box where he picks out Steven Naismith, who chests the ball down and scuffs a left-foot shot just wide of the post. That was a glorious chance for Rangers.

1306: Paul Dixon crosses for Lauri Dalla Valle but the ball is deflected back to Rangers keeper Allan McGregor.

1304: United manager Peter Houston is furious with the player. That was plain crazy. It was one of those half-hearted acts of mock bravado. Russell covers his face with his jersey as he leaves the pitch.

Red card
1302: Johnny Russell goes head to head with Rangers' Kirk Broadfoot, foolishly makes a head-butting motion and is sent off.

1259: Keith Watson cuts inside and swings a ball a fraction too strongly into the box.

1258: Centre-half Garry Kenneth gets his bonce to a cross but directs it just over the Rangers bar.

Yellow card
1255: Steven Davis is next to go in to the ref's wee black book, his use of an arm across Danny Swanson's face to prevent the United midfielder advancing towards the Rangers goal just not on.

Yellow card
1253: United's Danny Swanson slaloms into the box and falls over Dorin Goian's leg. Calum Murray flashes a yellow card at the midfielder for his laughably bad dive. He simply ran in to the Rangers defender.

1252: Eighteen entertaining minutes have passed. It's great to see two teams willing to have a go. This cannot finish 0-0...can it?

1251: Keith Watson swings a high cross from the right wing into the gloves of Rangers goalie Allan McGregor.

1249: Ooh, the boy put his laces through that one - United's Danny Swanson stings Allan McGregor's palms with a lovely strike from 25 yards. The corner for United comes to nothing, however.

1247: Kyle Lafferty cannot get enough purchase on a low shot from eight yards, then seconds later Gregg Wylde makes a break down the left wing and crosses for Steven Naismith but the little striker blasts the ball over the bar from six yards. Good defending by United to put pressure on Naismith.

1246: Rangers striker Steven Naismith heads the ball straight into Dusan Pernis's hands from all of 22 yards. No shortage of confidence from Scotland's scorer in midweek.

1244: Kyle Lafferty shows great determination to win the ball in midfield and gets in the box to reach Juanma Ortiz's low cross. Rangers hitting back now.

1242: Kyle Lafferty is at full stretch to reach a looping cross into the box but even the lanky Rangers striker cannot get on the end of it.

1241: Danny Swanson takes three corners in a row for United as they enjoy a good spell of pressure. Scott Robertson is another in tangerine who tries his luck from the edge of the box.

1239: The first chance of the game falls for United's Willo Flood, whose left-foot shot is deflected six inches past Allan McGregor's left-hand post. Great effort by the Irishman.

1237: The United defence are tackling crisply down their left-back area as Steven Whittaker combines with Ortiz to put pressure on the hosts.

1236: United's Gavin Gunning heads Juanma Ortiz's cross clear as Rangers start the brighter of the two sides.

1235: Carlos Bocanegra is in the middle of the Rangers defence against Lauri Dalla Valle, while Kirk Broadfoot is playing at left back for the visitors.

1233: And we're under way at a noisy Tannadice. The pitch looks fabulous.

1231: Dundee United have given a home debut to on-loan Fulham striker Lauri Dalla Valle. Let's see what the Finn can do in the SPL.

1229: Big centre-half Garry Kenneth looks pensive. I hate to think how he'd be looking if Rangers' best striker, Nikica Jelavic, was playing.

1227: The players are in the tunnel. Not long to kick-off now, folks.

1225: "If Rangers work hard enough in the middle of the park and up front and make Dundee United go back to front, their defenders will lap that up all afternoon. Dundee United would have to be at full strength today to think they could take all three points." BBC Radio Scotland football pundit Craig Paterson

1223: Calum Murray is the referee at Tannadice.

1222: RANGERS TEAM: McGregor, Whittaker, Goian, Bocanegra, Broadfoot, Juanma Ortiz, Davis, Edu, Wylde, Naismith, Lafferty. Subs: Alexander, McCulloch, Fleck, Healy, McKay, Kerkar, Perry.

1220: DUNDEE UNITED TEAM: Pernis, Watson, Kenneth, Gunning, Dixon, Russell, Flood, Robertson, Rankin, Swanson, Dalla Valle. Subs: McCallum, Douglas, Armstrong, Mackay-Steven, Allan, Dow, Marsh-Brown.

1218: As always, please get in touch by text to 80295 or using Twitter with the hashtag #bbcsportsound. Thanks!

1216: Dundee United beat Rangers once in their four league meetings last season, a 3-2 win at Ibrox.

1214: Matt McKay has set his sights on inclusion in the Rangers team to face Celtic next week. He said: "To have that game in the second week that I'm here is going to be great, just to get that experience. Whatever minutes I play, or even if I'm just there, I can understand what it's all about and get ready for ones in the future."

1211: Australian midfielder Matt McKay is on the bench for the visitors today, but Nikica Jelavic is out after sustaining an injury on international duty with Croatia.

1208: Dundee United have yet to win at home in the league this season, having lost to Dunfermline in their last run-out at Tannadice.

1206: BBC Radio Scotland pundit Billy Dodds predicts that United will "have a real go" at Rangers this afternoon.

1204: For all their troubles in European competition, Rangers top the SPL table and have yet to concede an away goal in the league this term.

1202: First up this afternoon, we head to Tannadice, or "Tanna-deetchy" if you prefer, for Dundee United v Rangers.

1200: Welcome to the live text commentary of today's Scottish Premier League action.
